About
Malawi is one of the poorest countries on earth. 90% of the population lives on less than €2 per day. Poverty is the absence of choice. Choice requires opportunity. Opportunity to learn, to grow, to belong, to make a difference, to own your future. The Children’s Fund of Malawi aims to provide underprivileged children and young adults in Malawi with the chance to live a life full of choices, so that they can free themselves from the constraints of poverty. We have been active in Malawi since 1992. In that time we have initiated a wide range of projects focussing on education, health, income generation, vocational training, and youth employability. To make sure that the work we do has as much impact as possible, our projects are always small in scale and implemented locally. We work closely with the people that we are trying to help, and always with the aim of transferring 'ownership' to the local population as soon as possible.

Current projects
Our current and biggest project to date has been the building and operating of Green Malata: an entrepreneurial training village where children and young adults learn tangible and financial skills beneficial for their future. The primary aim of Green Malata is to provide young adults with relevant vocational skills that are in demand in Malawi, and to help them start their own businesses so that they can support themselves and become financially self-reliant. At present children who finish secondary school and reach maturity leave their respective schools without the necessary skills to find employment, or to be self employed. In a job market where only 10% of secondary school graduates find formal employment, skills-training for self employment in the formal sector is crucial. At Green Malata children can enrol in a range of courses which can last between 4-6 months. These include: Agriculture & Animal Husbandry Welding and Fabrication Carpentry Tailoring Hairdressing Information Technology Baking Hospitality Management Renewable Energy After completing their courses, the students receive a starter-pack: tools and trade equipment, to enable them to start their own business. Students can also apply for a micro-credit if more specialised equipment is needed. It is our aim that at least 50% of our entrepreneurs have successfully gained (self) employment within one year of completing their course at Green Malata.
