Gili Eco Trust, or Yayasan Ekosistem Gili indah, is an NGO based on Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia. Founded in 2000 to protect the coral reefs around the Gili islands from destructive fishing such as dynamite and cyanide fishing. Collaborating with local fishermen, an agreement was concluded, defining the legal techniques of fishing, limited to certain authorized zones and in 2014, the Gilis were awarded an MPA status. Since then Gili Eco Trust has grown and expanded its activities from marine conservation to waste management and sustainable eco tourism. From 2004, Gili Eco Trust started the Biorock project, creating artificial reefs and restoring the natural habitat of thousands of fish in previously destroyed areas of reef. Gili Eco Trust also supervises the waste management on Gili Trawangan from collections to processing recyclable materials and transporting them off the island. Next to these two huge campaigns, there are many other environmental projects, such as working horse healthcare clinics and educational workshops for kids, tourists and hospitality staff.
Some of the 36 Heroes who support Gili Eco Trust:
|Sharing is caring!|
-Our mission is to create a sustainable island. -To promote ecotourism and provide a healthy environment for working animals. -To restore our coral reefs and to replenish our natural fish populations. -To ensure that all waste created on Gili T is reduced to minimum levels and managed and separated properly for recycling projects where materials can be transported off the island. Waste Management Working with local NGO - FMPL to gain a zero-waste-to-landfill island with an integrated waste and recycling facility, employing a local work force to create 'Eco Rangers' to patrol the island in search of environmental disturbances, educating the community about waste separation, plastic reduction and rewarding sustainable businesses. Marine Park Management Gili Trawangan was declared a Marine Protected Area in 2014. With huge lack of policing and enforcement many destructive fishing anchoring and damage to the reefs continue. We continue to independently fund further moorings, management, education & enforcement to protect the marine park around Gili Trawangan. Coral Restoration Constant maintenance of our beautiful Biorock marine park, rebuilding coral reefs that were destroyed. We have implemented coral nurseries to house baby corals that can be transplanted to reefs in the future.
