About
Established in 1996 AWARE (formerly Aware Defeat Depression) is the only charity in Northern Ireland that exclusively works to support those affected by depression. AWARE provides a range of services and education and training programmes to support those affected by this illness but also to educate people in looking after their mental health. We offer a helpline and run 22 support groups throughout Northern Ireland to support those affect by depression. AWARE also offers a full range of education and health and wellbeing programmes to young people in schools and communities in NI including Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based education and training programmes and also Mental Health First Aid courses to support teachers in schools. The programmes we deliver are of the highest clinical standard and last year we reached out to over 20,000 people in face to face interactions through our schools programme, our education and training programmes and support groups. We are a small organisation with a big job to do – our growth reflects very much the needs of people in NI – and we aim to reach out to more people supporting them wherever they are in the province.

Living Life to the Full This is a programme which can make a big difference to your life. It can help you manage your feelings when you are stressed, worried or depressed and learn simple practical skills to help you cope with life’s challenges. This is a six-session programme using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) concepts – the most evidenced-based talking therapy for people affected by low mood, anxiety or depression. The programme has been developed by Dr Chris Williams, professor of Psychiatry at University of Glasgow and a recognised expert in developing self-help resources based on CBT. It introduces participants to the ‘Five Areas Approach’ which illustrates that events and situations in our lives affect how we think, how we feel, how we behave and also affect us physically. Thinking and behaviour are the two areas that we have most control over, if we tend to think and/or behave in extreme and unhelpful ways, it can adversely affect the other areas and lead to us getting caught in a ‘vicious circle’. The programme therefore focuses on how we can challenge and change our thinking and behaviour in order to turn the circle into a ‘virtuous circle’. The programme is delivered by experienced facilitators who will ensure that you get the most from the course and start Living Life to the Full. LLTTF is delivered to groups in community settings and there are also a number of ‘open’ courses which individuals can enrol on.
