Page Ahead Gives Kids in Need the Chance to Read! Guided by the fact that literacy is essential to lifelong success, Page Ahead provides new books and develops reading activities that empower at-risk children. Page Ahead is the leading provider of children's books and literacy services in Washington State, serving more than 850,000 children with over 2.7 million new books since 1990. We serve children, families and communities, with new books for children, literacy support for families, and reading resources for communities. Page Ahead operates on one simple and astounding fact: being read to as a youngster is the foremost predictor of academic success in childhood. If a child can read at grade level by 3rd grade, she will continue to read at grade level throughout her academic career. A child who succeeds in school will remain there, earning a chance at a better job and a better life in the years ahead. A child who lacks early exposure to reading often suffers from low self-esteem, struggles academically, and is at higher risk for substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and delinquency. Succeeding begins with reading.

Page Ahead’s Book Up Summer program gives young students the tools and incentive they need to read during summer vacation. Grounded in current literacy research, this evidence-based reading program is offered to high-poverty elementary schools through Page Ahead’s partnerships with school districts across Washington State. Book Up Summer gives students in kindergarten through second grade their choice of summer reading materials at no cost to the student. At book fairs in April - June, students shop for their own books. Each student receives their choice of 12 new books that are theirs to keep and read over summer vacation and beyond. What’s the trick to “making” the kids read the books? Give them books they want to read! Students make their own choices from a wide variety of fun, fiction, nonfiction, series, science related and kid-culture books. There is something to interest even the most reluctant reader! "Dear Page Ahead, Thank you for the 12 books! I'm real good at reading now. I'm so good, I can't believe it!" - Emma Enabling students to choose reading material of interest to them is an important factor in the results. Children from low-income families often have no books of their own, and getting to pick out their very own brand new books is a powerful motivator to read.
