Mehr Infos
Set on a 38.5 acre site in truly beautiful surroundings, the Sanctuary’s aim is to provide a place of refuge for elderly, unwanted, sickly, abandoned and abused donkeys and small ponies. Once so much a part of the Irish heritage these animals are now often forgotten or neglected in a world geared more for profit and production. It is currently home to 54 donkeys and 33 horses and ponies.
The Sathya Sai Sanctuary Trust is is dedicated to Sri Sathya Sai Baba, a non-sectarian spiritual teacher from India, who gave the project his blessing 1991. The Trust is funded largely by private donation and is run entirely on a voluntary basis as a registered Irish charity.
Situated adjacent to the ancient Neolithic site of Carrowkeel, in the Bricklieve Mountains at Castlebaldwin, Co. Sligo, two and a half miles (4 kms) from the N4 Dublin to Sligo road. We are open to visitors at weekends and Bank Holidays throughout the summer months from 1st April – 31st October (other times by appointment please) so come and enjoy these humble animals and give them the love and respect they deserve. Be welcome!

Apart from its own 38.5 acres of rough hill grazing/bogland the Sanctuary rents a further 40 acres of good summer grazing mostly for use by the bigger horses and any undernourished newcomers. Over the years we have planted large shelter belts and hedges of mixed evergreen and herbaceous trees around the boundaries of each field to provide shelter for both the equines and indigenous wildlife and most fields have a built shelter to protect the animals in bad weather and from flies in the summer. Much of the land is rich in natural flora and we do our best to rest the more delicate areas throughout different times of the year to allow for regeneration. Check out our wonderful website which was created and is maintained by a dedicated and talented volunteer. Take a look at the galleries; the Adopt a Donkey/Pony Scheme; read about how the Sanctuary started; catch up with our bi-annual newsletters from way back in the early 90’s and much, much more.
