Mehr Infos
We work on the front line of conservation, saving primates from the illegal bushmeat and pet trades. Ape Action Africa is passionate about great ape conservation in Cameroon. Our mission is to address the immediate threats faced by gorillas and chimps in Africa and to work with communities to develop long-term solutions to ensure their survival in the wild. We rescue orphaned and injured gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys, some only days old and hours from death. Once they are in our care, we work around the clock in Cameroon’s Mefou primate sanctuary to give them urgent veterinary care and nourishment. In the protected zone of our Mefou primate sanctuary, safe from poachers, the animals are cared for by our expert team of caregivers, many of whom are local community members that have joined our fight to protect Cameroon's natural heritage. Eventually, when the young orphans are strong enough, we reintroduce them to groups of their own kind in safe and controlled environments. We operate a thriving education program for local school children, who are encouraged to visit Mefou to see Cameroon's wildlife in its natural environment. We are committed to identifying areas that can be set aside as protected habitat for rescued gorillas and chimpanzees. It is our hope that one day the great apes and monkeys in our care will be released back into the wild, where they belong.

Our work providing sanctuary for our rescued gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys continues in Cameroon, and we’re doing everything we can to keep our orphans safe and healthy during the COVID-19 crisis. It’s by no means ‘business as usual’ – we’re closed to visitors, our volunteer programme and our education and community projects are on hold, fundraising events have been postponed, our staff are living permanently on-site, we have enhanced health protocols in place, and we’re facing the challenge of finding funding to cover rising costs. But we’re still caring, and everyday life for our rescued apes and monkeys remains largely unchanged. So, if you’d like to show us your support, but can’t afford to give financially, here are four suggestions for things that you can do for us and for primates during the coronavirus pandemic and beyond. Connect with us! Please leave comments on our social media posts or send us a message that we can pass on to our dedicated team in the forest. Act for primates! Though we’re all experiencing restrictions, our everyday choices can still have an impact on deforestation and on the future of endangered gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys. Raise Funds! If your friends and family are in a position to give, you can set up a fundraiser to help us meet rising food and equipment costs in Cameroon. Educate people about primate conservation! Raising awareness of primates and the threats that they face in the wild is vital.
